Hi Ken
Just had a few weeks travelling around and was surprised just how well the smoking ban (that I mentioned last month) has worked in Spain. Clearly there are plenty people who don't like it but fines imposed on bars that don't comply are so hefty that bar owners are being very careful to ensure that smokers go outside. A couple of other new laws I noticed were the banning of dogs from bars and the refusal of chemists to sell prescription medicines (many tourists used to stock up on antibiotics, etc, when visiting). Spain has joined the 21st century and I don't know if I like it!

More alarming than these changes in the law are the effects of the recession. So many business premises have been abandoned and levels of unemployment are at frightening levels. Unfortunately, the response of too many bar and restaurant owners in the cities seems to be to increase prices in line with their falling revenue. Spain used to be a relatively cheap holiday destination but I'm afraid that is no longer the case. Such pricing is less obvious in popular holiday resorts where competition between bars and restaurants ensure there's plenty good value if you look around.

New Rail Route to Spain

There's a new high speed line between Perpignan and Figueres in Catalonia offering travellers a new way to travel from the UK to Spain. In total, 44km of high speed track has been built between Perpignan and Figueres, and a new tunnel - the Perthus Tunnel - has been constructed in order to allow high speed trains to operate between France and Spain. TGVs will run to Figueres Vilafant station, until a brand new station opens in 2012. Buses will run every 15 minutes between Figueres Vilafant station and the town centre. Passengers travelling onwards to Girona or Barcelona can pick up an onwards train from Vilafant station which is just a simple platform change.
