| Ken has already mentioned my favourite author (Bernard Cornwell - Sharp etc). Not only is he a great writer but a great historian too and always researches his subjects like no other. Another author to enjoy is one that Ken introduced me to - Lee Child with his Jack Reacher books. Until the last 2 or 3 they were top sellers and well worth reading but I think the last 2/3(one is in 2 parts) he's badly lost the 'plot' . It would be a good time through for them to make some 'Jack Reacher' films and I would love to see Vin Diesel in n the lead. Bernard Cornwell does rule the roost for me but one or two other contemporaries are gaining ground very fast ! If your into macho historical type books - after Cornwell I would suggest Simon Scarrow especially his books on Rome and two excellent characters - Cato and Macro. Best start them in order through as their progress through the Legions is berst followed in order. Another author closing on them fast is Conn Iggulden who wrote one excellent set of novels on Ghengis Khan and is busy with others along that line. The sad thing is that Scarrow and Iggulden only manage about one novel a year - the good thing about Cornwell is he manages 2 to 3 a year. He also has a wideer variety in that his sets of Novels have ranged from the US civil war down through to Agincourt, King Harold and the Saxons, King Arthur (now thats a greatly different view of him etc - some good historical surprises - espescially if you thought Lancelot was a nice bloke). He's even gone back to Stone Hendge which was a long read but weel worth it. His latest 'The Fort' covers a fictional account of a real event during the US revolutionary War ( read it and WEEP yanks). As my back improves and I can start writing 'vertical' again , I'll add some more great reading for you to try.
Regards to all | |
